Measurement Help

This page will guide you through the design and planning process of your kitchen. Here, you will find step-by-step instructions on how to measure your kitchen or bathroom, and how to create the floor plan you will use to create your new room.

Measuring

Follow these steps in sequence around your room until you return to the starting point.

Ceiling Height
Wall Length
Important Tips

Ceiling Height

Note ceiling height and soffit height (if applicable). A soffit is the lower surface of a part of a ceiling that has been built lower, such as to contain an air duct or light fixture. Soffits are more common in older homes.

Wall Length

When measuring a wall, you must also keep in mind the exact size of any wall space that is lost to features such as windows. To ensure accurate measurements, follow these steps.

A. Measure the size of the wall.

B. If there are any windows, measure from the left corner to the window molding.

C. Measure the window itself.

D. Measure from the window molding to the right corner.

NOTE: Measurements "B" "C" and "D" should equal "A"

Important Tips

  • Measure in inches only.
  • Do not measure your cabinets. Measure your walls as if the room were empty.
  • Measure any appliances that you are keeping and note their locations. This will ensure that your new kitchen is compatible with the appliances you intend to use.
  • Keep in mind the measurements of any new appliances you plan to add to your kitchen. For example, a refrigerator needs at least 1/2" to 1" of clearance on both sides. If you are not sure, obtain the exact measurements and clearance specifications of your new appliances before you begin.

Measuring The Room

Sketch Your Room

Draw a rough layout of your kitchen or room. Include all walls, corners, windows, doors, and major features.

Measure Each Wall

Measure every wall from the left corner to the far-right corner. Record the total wall length in inches.

Measure to Openings

Measure from the left corner of the wall to the edge of any opening, such as a window or door.

Measure the Opening Width

Measure across the opening from trim edge to trim edge.

Measure Remaining Wall Space

Measure from the trim edge of the opening to the far wall. The total of the previous three measurements should match the full wall length.

Also mark the exact locations of sinks, plumbing lines, electrical outlets, and switches. Measure to the center of these items.

Measure Window Heights

For windows, measure floor to windowsill, windowsill to top of window, top of window to ceiling. Then measure the full floor-to-ceiling height. The totals should match.

Measure Door Openings

Measure the door width from trim edge to trim edge. Indicate the direction of the door swing on your drawing.

Measure Appliances

Record the height, width, and depth of all appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, and dishwashers. Mark their positions on your drawing and account for required clearance.

Finally, review and double-check all measurements for accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Accurate measurements ensure cabinets fit properly within your kitchen layout and avoid costly adjustments during installation. Correct dimensions also help our design team optimize cabinet placement and spacing.

You typically only need a tape measure, a pencil, and paper to sketch your layout. A level and a smartphone camera can also help capture wall conditions, obstacles, and reference photos.

Measure wall lengths, ceiling height, window and door positions, and the location of plumbing, outlets, and appliances. Recording these details helps ensure cabinets fit correctly within your available space.

Our design team reviews your submitted measurements before finalizing any cabinet configuration. If something appears inconsistent, we will reach out to confirm details and help prevent errors before production begins.

If possible, measure after old cabinets are removed so you can access the full wall dimensions. If they are still installed, measure visible spaces carefully and include notes about any obstructions.
